Music Theatre Wales release second NEW DIRECTIONS piece as part of Black History Month Wales

Published on 18/10/21

Music Theatre Wales are proud to present the second piece in our NEW DIRECTIONS programme. The piece is presented as part of Black History Month.

Pride (A Lion’s Roar) narrates the experience of prejudice that many people of colour have endured: of being told that you are “aggressive” or “too loud” because your metaphorical roars are unfamiliar within the environments that you have to operate within. Of being made to feel like you have to make yourself smaller to be accepted, turning your roar into a purr so that others don’t feel threatened. Pride (A Lion's Roar) is a new digital opera created by Renell Shaw (composer/music producer) and Rachael Young (librettist/chorus melody), with visuals by Kyle Legall.

New Directions is a commissioning programme from Music Theatre Wales, led by Associate Artist Elayce Ismail and Director Michael McCarthy. Our ambition at MTW is to be a driving force for change, and with New Directions we are bringing new artists to opera, provoking change in the way opera is made and perceived by addressing who is commissioned to create it. Initially working with Black, Asian and ethnically diverse artists, who historically have been underrepresented in the industry, New Directions will give opera a new voice and new ownership, whilst celebrating it as a multidisciplinary and contemporary art form.
